Upcoming 50|50 Episode 36, Monday 19 December 2011

1) Black-footed cats

This insert tracks the journey of a pair of black-footed cats as they travel a road of recovery and then encounter their freedom. This sibling pair was surrendered to the Free me Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre by a well meaning person, when it became apparent that these feisty wild cats, found on the side of the road, made anything but cute pets! Hence began a journey for the two felines.

These are extremely rare cats and not much information is available on them. Scientists, biologists, vets and all manner of experts and carers had a role to play in finding a home for the pair, collecting much needed biological samples and accumulating knowledge on the lifestyles of the naturally elusive cats.

2) Dinokeng

We all go to National Parks and drive around and watch out for animals and birds. We stay in the accommodation supplied by these parks and yet, how often do we take time out to think about how this all came together? In this insert, we explore the opening of the Dinokeng Game Reserve north of Pretoria and follow the journey and excitement of bringing it all together.

All of the Big 5 are being introduced to Dinokeng and this will be the only place in Gauteng province to host the Big 5. We will highlight the process of relocating lions and elephants from far off reserves as well as some of the hardships experienced in the establishment of this Park. We also talk about how the surrounding communities played a role in the development of Dinokeng.

3) Braam Profile

Tonight, Braam embarks on another of his epic adventures. This time he is not running the entire length of the Great Wall of China, but rather racing to the South Pole through snow, ice and sleet. This time the cause is climate change. In this five-minute profile, we bring you a little more up close and personal with the person Braam Malherbe – what drives the man behind the familiar face that you see on the 50|50 screens so often?

4) It’s Up to Us

Litha and Anya do their bit at COP 17.

5) Villiers talks about getting the “bigger picture”
